Chapter Seven

Ash stayed in the living room, listening as both alphas talked. Ash still didn’t fully understand the change in Calvin, but it clearly had something to do with the trauma he had gone through. Ash wasn’t going to ask any questions beyond that.

They had to work fast. They either had to get rid of that hunter Calvin had killed outside or call the police and say there had been a bear attack or something.

They had a limited amount of time to decide which they were going to do, since the police were fairly good at determining cause of death, time of death, and everything else television implied they were good at.

“Wolf attack,” Ash said.

Both men looked at him.

Ash scratched his shoulder, still feeling cold after seeing Harris again and talking about dead bodies.

“They’ll know it was a wolf, that it wasn’t as big as a bear. You can say a pack of wolves did it. It’ll explain the bullet holes in the house, too.

Dakota and Calvin looked at each other, and both men nodded.

Calvin had to leave in order for this to work. Since he hadn’t been here when the detectives had come earlier, he couldn’t be here now, especially with the burns on his face.

He shifted into his wolf form, and with a promise to lead the detectives on a wild chase, he vanished through the trees. Dakota shifted into his wolf form and stomped around the grounds, even following Calvin for a bit to give the impression of a wolf pack before he came back, cleaned up, put on some clothes, and called the police.

Ash wasn’t sure how much he was allowed to clean up, but he put the chair back in the kitchen and swept the floor of the bits of wood that had splintered from the bullet holes in the door while he waited for the detectives to return.

They came back, and they didn’t look too happy to see Ash and Dakota again. It was still dark outside, and the detectives both looked tired and irritable, with circles under their eyes, but alert.

Especially when they pulled up and saw the body waiting for them.

Ash had to watch from his bedroom window. From that vantage point, he was able to see the detectives and the other police and crew coming in, without looking at, or smelling, the body on the front lawn.

Still, he needed to be questioned.

Ash answered everything as best as he could. He was honest for the most part. He’d heard shouts and shots, and he’d woken up in time to run downstairs, open the door, and see a man being ripped apart by a wolf. He slammed the door shut when one of the wolves ran to the door.

Since Harris was like a wolf, the bad kind of wolf, Ash didn’t consider that much of a lie, and Dakota had taken the time to scratch the front door a little to make it more believable.

The detectives talked to him for a couple of hours and even asked him to answer some questions down at the station.
